Colin is a long standing and well respected woodturning tutor at West Dean College in West Sussex. He is now offering woodturning courses to beginners, improvers and the more experienced turner in his workshop in North Devon.  

 

If you are a beginner I recommend following one of my structured courses. Improvers and more experienced turners are, of course, able to follow a structured course, but I am very happy to tailor the day to meet the student’s specific requirements.

 

Tuition is intensive, but I aim to create a relaxed, friendly atmosphere in which students can learn and enjoy themselves. My courses are intended to give the student the maximum hands on experience possible.

 

All tools and safety equipment is provided and the timber is included in the price of the course. A light lunch is also included in the price of the course.

 

Structured courses will introduce the lathe, safety aspects, the tools and how to sharpen them.

 

Bowl turning will be covered and students will make a small bowl, learning to cut the wood the way it likes being cut.

 

Basic spindle turning will also be covered, if time permits, and we will also cover cutting end grain to hollow for example, egg cups, goblets and lidded boxes.

 

Whilst it is nice to go home with something you have made on the course, (and you will make at least one piece) I believe it is more important to go home with the knowledge and confidence to continue to learn safely in your own workshop.

 

If you have them I recommend you bring your own tools so that they can be sharpened correctly and so that you can use them rather than mine. After all, you will be using them in your own workshop.

 

If you don’t have any equipment, don’t worry – it’s all provided.

 

I can give independent advice of all aspects of woodturning including unbiased opinions on lathes, chucks, tools and accessories.

 

For students that already have a sound knowledge of basic turning, I can run courses tailored to your specific requirements. Topics that can be covered include, but are not limited to:

 

• Wood conversion

• Wet/green turning

• Hollow forms

• Larger bowls and platters

• Surface enhancement and texturing

• Colouring and staining

• Off centred turning

 

The cost of my courses is £225 per person per day. A discount of 10% is available for two people booking the same course at the same time.
